a bit about me

Hello, my name’s Ronald and I’ve been working in the digital industry since 2000 for product, digital agencies, advertising and software companies – designing apps, microsites, animation & games, e-commerce, software, DM, brand and ABL digital campaigns.

I now predominantly focus on product design and get inspired by technology that are used to enable better working/living environments and outcomes. I’m open for contract works as a UX / Product Designer.

Most recently, I worked with the smart folks at Orbica designing their geospatial platform, and prior to that with the Watercare Digital teams on their operational products to help field workers, operators and analysts to be safer, better informed and efficient in their task (e.g. Jobcare and Nerve Centre apps).

Up till mid 2019, I was product designing at Pushpay as the UX Design Lead for their engagement and community apps team. At Pushpay I get to tackle a project from its research phase all the way to interaction and UI design. As part of my approach, I worked closely with other designers, product managers and engineers around team-building, collaborative design process and refining the Pushpay design systems.

Earlier on I was the Associate Design Director at Digital Arts Network (Auckland), where many of my projects were UX-led. Digital Arts gave me the opportunity to lead and nurture the design team on strategic and tactical levels. I joined Digital Arts as an experience designer early on, and over time I learnt the arts of design research and user testing from local and international UX gurus. This inspired me to balance my practice between user insights, creative intuition, technology and data.

Methodical and a system designer by heart, my strengths are in interaction and UI design. I also enjoy conducting user research/testing, design strategy and prototyping. Having a clear product vision and desirability are key aspects in achieving success in your business. We need to translate this vision into a strategic road map towards building a product, service or brand that your customers love and couldn't live without.

Above are a few illustrations I did for Pushpay’s meeting rooms.

Colleagues find me conscientious, a team player with high design standard and attention to details. I’m intrigued by new technology, illustration, spatial design, travel and movies. I now spend my leisure time exploring hiking tracks, forest bathing and landscape photography.

Photography

I'm blessed to be living in gorgeous New Zealand and visiting different landscapes across the world. By composing nature, structures and spaces through photography I’m often reminded of their beauty and quiet fullness. Capturing that moment in time is meditative for me and I hope they inspire people to explore and appreciate the spaces we live in. I sometimes post newer stuff on Instagram @ronin.jo.
